The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Frost's Descent, (Chinese: 霜降), the 18th solar term of the year, is the last solar term of autumn, Frost's Descent is regarded as a transitional solar term from autumn to winter, during which time the weather becomes much colder than before and frost begins to appear. In the autumn nights, there is a lot of heat on the ground, the water vapor in the air, on the ground or plants, condenses directly to form tiny ice needles when the temperature quickly drops to below 0 degree, some of which become hexagonal frost flowers that in white color and loose structure.
It is a period of high incidence of respiratory diseases in late autumn. Eating more foods such as pears, apples, olives, ginkgo, onions, mustard greens, radishes, etc. is believed to be helpful in moisturizing lungs and relieving cough, and preventing respiratory diseases. Eating persimmons during Frost's Descent helps people to resist the cold and protect bones. In the countryside, people believe that the lips will crack if they don't eat persimmons during this period.
